I have discovered, the short answer is often the most dangerous answer. For instance, I have heard many a-well-meaning-persons say, “Worry is the result of not trusting God.” Or “Fear and Faith cannot co-exist.” I must confess, I have repeated these words many times. But when I am the one worried and afraid, the short answer doesn’t help me. It only compounds my worry and fear. Now on top of what I was already worried about, I am worried about my lack of trust in God.

ree

This does not help me trust God more. Now, on top of the thing I feared, I now fear that my faith in God is insufficient. The short answer has never helped me trust God more. The short answer has never built my faith. Am I alone in this? Or has this happened to you? The short answer oftentimes will leave you exposed, vulnerable and feeling defenseless and inadequate. Therefore, you shroud yourself in a cloak of deception. “It’s all good!” “I’m good!” “I’m okay!” You’re okay…. When you are not okay. So, what is the alternative to these dangerous short answers for overcoming the anxieties which accompany worry and fear?

Enter the Word of God. Scripture is God’s own, marvelous remedy for overcoming anxiety, worry and fear. For instance, Psalm 91 has a pointed address to worry and fear, real or perceived. Let’s take a close look.

ree

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. Psalm 91:1–6 (AV)

Who are you? Let’s get that question out of the way. Who are you? Is this passage talking about you? Is it you who dwells in the secret place of the Most High and spends the night under the shadow of His protection. In His safety. In His salvation. If not, It’s not too late for you.

ree

The Lord God, is likened to a strong tower, and them that run to Him will be safe. It’s not too late for you. All you need do is confess and believe. The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Romans 10:8–11 (AV)

Night terrors. This happens to you more times then you care to admit. When you are awakened from your sleep, gripped with fear, of some insidious presence. That bad dream that snatches your peace.

ree

You scarcely recall the details but there is no denying how it made you feel. But did you know, there may be more afoot than just your mind playing tricks on you. There may be more happening than meets the eye.

The terror of the night may be a reference to night demons, such as Lilith, the name of a female demon in ancient Semitic legends. It may mean the “hunters’ trap”. Who is the hunter who would steal you joy, your peace, your confidence, your safety, your life and finally your soul. Night terror may also mean a pack of wild dogs.

ree

A pack of wild dogs in the night. Who are these blood thirsty ravenous dogs? It is no wonder that Night terrors are synonymous with “an attack.” Or “dangers at night”. While this is spiritual in nature I do not want to under-appreciate the real physical dangers. Nevertheless, the meaning of Night terrors appear to be the unseen evil associated with darkness. But the great news is that the Word of God promises, “you need not fear evil spirits that go about at night, or The arrows that fly by day, whether by human invention or demonic dangers. No weapon formed against you shall prosper.

It is indeed the Word of God which remedies your anxiety, addresses your worries and dispels your fear.

There is a story in the Biblical account of the Gospel of Mark, where Jesus invited his disciples to sail across the sea. Many of these disciples where seasoned seafaring fisherman.

And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still.

And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? Mark 4:35–41 (AV)

There was indeed a terror that came upon the disciples, the wind and the waves were a real threat. They were almost in a panic. They called on the Lord Jesus. The Gospel of John refers to Jesus as the Logos, the Word. So here, I like to think that in the midst of the storm, and in the hopelessness of a sinking ship, they called on the Word of God. And the Word of God rebuked the storm and calmed the sea. The Word of God neutralized the threat, “Peace! Be still.”

ree

Then in an twist of irony, Jesus gave the short answer, “why are you fearful, you of little faith?” And they feared, all the more.
